What is Anti-Vax?

Anti-Vaxxers are people who oppose the use of vaccines for a number of reasons.Vaccines, they say, are also dangerous and infringe on their human rights. They usually dispute the presence or relevance of the science that supports their widespread use.

How about Anti-Vax Movement?

Lessons learned from researching cults (also known as modern religious movements and referring to movements that originated in the late twentieth century) can be applied to the anti-vax movement. A cult has come to represent a non-conforming philosophy or a faith that is disliked by the general public, with views that are unacceptably radical.

The Centre for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) has released a new study that criticises social media firms for enabling the anti-vaccine movement to thrive on their platforms. According to the writers of the study, anti-vaxxers' social media accounts have grown their following by at least 78 million people since 2019.

The anti-vaccine movement seems to have found this out already. A study published in Nature earlier this year looked at how people felt about vaccination on the internet. Anti-vaccination clusters, despite their smaller overall scale, manage to become strongly intertwined with undecided clusters in the main online network, while pro-vaccination clusters are more peripheral, according to the writers.

They predicted that the anti-vaccination movement will outnumber pro-vaccination voices online in ten years. If that happened, the ramifications will be much greater than COVID-19.

We decide to choose this topic to make sure people have more knowledge about vaccination activities.

GLOBALLY

Vaccine development was tested in 2020 when a novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, emerged from China causing a severe acute respiratory illness, which subsequently spread globally. Within 5 months of the discovery of this virus (7th January 2020)  and person-person transmission, 5,697,334 cases had been identified, with orders of magnitude likely not measured and almost no country escaped the pandemic. Owing to the previous advances in vaccinology, by 8th April 2020, there were 73 vaccine candidates under pre-clinical investigation . Of these, six were in Phase 1 or 1/2 trials and one was in Phase 2/3 trials by 28th May 2020. The rapidity of this response demonstrated the ability to harness existing technologies including: RNA vaccine platforms , DNA vaccine platforms , recombinant vector vaccines  and adjuvants. The regulation, manufacturer and distribution of these vaccines will require expedition given the global public health need, from a period of many years to a matter of months. The efficacy and health impact of these vaccines is yet to be established, but if they are effective, then vaccines need to be made available for all global regions affected by SARS-CoV-2. The funding of this endeavor will prove challenging in a global context of national social and economic lockdown and massive government borrowing, but the justification for this provision will be through the multiple benefits to society that will need healthy citizens to rebuild economies in the decades post-COVID-19.

1) The most significant impact of vaccines has been to prevent morbidity and mortality from serious infections . Vaccines are estimated to prevent almost six million deaths/year and to save 386 million life years and 96 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) globally.

2) Globally, the provision of vaccines is more challenging in many low- and middle- income countries.

- Central to this is limited financial resources, but other barriers to vaccine introduction include: underappreciation of the value of vaccines locally/regionally though insufficient relevant data on disease burden, vaccine efficacy, or cost-effectiveness; inadequate healthcare infrastructure for vaccine handling, storage, programmatic management, and disease surveillance; and lack of global, regional or local policy-making and leadership

3) Global disease eradication can be achieved for pathogens that are restricted to human reservoirs. For eradication of infectious diseases, high levels of population immunity are required globally, to ensure no ongoing transmission in our well-connected world.

4) experiencing a downturn in economics and trade.

 SOCIETY

The overriding health benefit perceived by most vaccine recipients is their personal, direct, protection. The added value of vaccination, on a population level, is the potential to generate herd immunity. Where a sufficiently high proportion of the population are vaccinated, transmission of the infecting agent is halted thereby protecting the unvaccinated, who may be those too young, too vulnerable, or too immunosuppressed to receive vaccines.

What is WHO doing to monitor and understand the impact of virus variants on the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines?

WHO has been tracking mutations and variants since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak. Our global SARS-CoV-2 laboratory network includes a dedicated Virus Evolution Working Group, which aims to detect new changes quickly and assess their possible impact.

Why is it important to get vaccinated even if there are new variants of the virus?

Vaccines are a critical tool in the battle against COVID-19, and there are clear public health and lifesaving benefits to using the tools we already have. We must not put off getting vaccinated because of our concerns about new variants, and we must proceed with vaccination even if the vaccines may be somewhat less effective against some of the COVID-19 virus variants. We need to use the tools we have in hand even while we continue to improve those tools. We are all safe only if everyone is safe.

IMPACT

1) Threatens the health of family and community by spreading the virus.

2) Influencing others not to get the vaccine

3) Society cannot do daily activities life as before

4) The community will have difficulty in making the move to other states

Vaccines are one of the safest and most effective health interventions for infectious diseases. However, there are some people who still disagree to the use of vaccines for a variety of reasons. They are called “Anti-Vaxxer”. A minority of people oppose their use and some actively spread misinformation about the safety and effectiveness of vaccines.

Challenges of having a group of anti-vaxxer is when misunderstanding of the information about vaccines is wrong. Anti-vaxxers movement can influence people’s decision to vaccinate themselves or their children. When people have this mindset of not taking the vaccines, the risk of their health and well-being will be in danger. For example, we all know that Covid-19 is a disease that can spread widely, but now the vaccine have been released and is already being distributed to the community in stages. If people disagree to the use of vaccine, the chain of Covid-19 will continue. Challenges is everywhere but once the declaration of information is made, we could have a chance of changing anti-vaxxers’ mind.

Mistrust of Science

The opposition of vaccines comes from people who mistrust of science. They believe that pharmaceutical companies and scientists want to sell a product to make huge profits. Others are having doubts of the science that they do not acknowledge or the chemicals that used to make the vaccine. Besides, homeopathic treatments are being selected by these people because the instant soothing symptoms of some conditions. People who mistrust science are less likely to vaccinate and they do not trust medical practitioners who recommend vaccines.

Availability and Accessibility

People that lived in rural areas are most likely have the difficulty accessing the services of government health clinics. They do not own a personal vehicle, or it is hard to find a transportation to get to the health clinics causing them to miss the vaccine appointments. In addition, there is no internet connection in remote places, and it is even harder for them to get the latest update about the vaccination plan from the government. Likewise, they are not aware about the benefits of vaccine.

Misconception and Concern About The Vaccine

People that were influenced by hoaxes via social media, such as Facebook and WhatsApp, claimed that the immunization program is a “New World” conspiracy. This conspiracy came from people that do not trust the government and even worse, these people will share the fake news to seek attention. Others claimed that the vaccine is not permitted or halal because of the ingredients used to make the vaccine. This becomes a major concern especially to Muslims that lived in Islamic countries.

The anti-vaccine movement has been rising throughout the world. It all started because of the hoax. They try to convince people out there to believe them about the dangerous of vaccine. Causing people to believe it and end up many people die. But the fact is vaccine is important tools to prevent the disease and build the immune system. Below are the lists of benefits that we can get:

i) Vaccine keeps you from getting Covid-19

Based on the vaccines for other diseases and preliminary data from clinical trials, experts believe that getting a Covid-19 vaccine can help keep you from getting seriously ill even if you do get Covid-19. Getting vaccinated may also protect those around you, especially those who are at a higher risk of severe illness from Covid-19.

ii) Can start doing daily activities

During the pandemic, people are restricted to do daily activities. It is because the virus can easily spread through droplet while talking. Once you are fully vaccinated, the chance of getting the virus is minimum. So, we do not have to worry about getting the virus while doing daily activities. Make sure yourself has taken the second dose before doing some outdoor activities. People are not considered fully vaccinated until two weeks after their second dose. You should keep using all the tools available like face mask, sanitizer, and glove (optional) to protect yourself and others.

iii) Vaccination will be the tools to stop the pandemic

It is not enough to just wearing a face mask or keeping the distance from each other. It is impossible for us to do things like that forever. So other method that are more effective is by taking the vaccine. Vaccination is the most effective way to kill the virus and stop the pandemic. It will build your immune system in the body so that it can fight the virus and we will get back our normal daily life.

All these things happen is according to the provisions of God. We as a servant of God need to accept it with open heart. There must be light at the end of the adversity. But do not just wait for the light, we must find it. We must make some effort to handle it like getting vaccinated. But all the effort will be in vain if we do not help each other either as a citizen or a government.
